Revealing Life's Colors: An Artistic Journey through the Lens

1. How did your passion for photography develop?

From a young age, I was captivated by the beauty of landscapes and would mentally capture them, dreaming of visiting those enchanting places. I have always had a deep appreciation for the traditional colors and fashion styles found in diverse cultures.

In 1992, when I was just 12 years old, I would visit the Rite Aid store across from our house in the United States. While my friends were engrossed in reading about classic cars, lowriders, and bodybuilding, I found myself irresistibly drawn to books and articles about cameras, photography, and fashion. I immersed myself in learning about these subjects and honing my skills.

2. You were born in Sudan. Could you share some memorable experiences from your childhood, and when did you come to the United States?

We migrated to the United States in 1991. Looking back at my time in Sudan, what stands out the most are the vibrant memories of happiness and joy that filled the air. I have fond recollections of playing barefoot football with friends in every neighborhood. Those moments were incredibly special, and they symbolize the pure joy and camaraderie we experienced.

I also have vivid memories of community gatherings where everyone would come together to celebrate life. We would share stories, play music, and engage in lively dancing. The adults would enthrall us with their captivating narratives, while the children would sit and listen attentively, laughing and showcasing our own talents alongside them. It was a time of connection, laughter, and shared experiences that left an indelible mark on my heart.

Embarking on a journey fueled by passion, Yared Berhane, a talented photographer hailing from Sudan and of Eritrean heritage, is determined to continue living his American dream.

Born on January 3, 1980, Yared Tekleab Berhane's roots trace back to the rich culture of Eritrea, while he entered the world in Sudan. His artistic inclination began to bloom at a tender age, as he started capturing people's true essence through the lens of his camera at the age of five. Nurtured by his older brother, Amanuel Berhane, Yared honed his artistic skills, which extended beyond photography to drawing and sculpting. During his high school years, he garnered numerous accolades, solidifying his pursuit of excellence.

Yared's creative prowess goes beyond photography, encompassing a passion for drawing and sculpting. His artistic versatility extends to ceramics, where he masterfully crafts pieces in various forms. With his innate ability to observe and understand the human experience, Yared effortlessly captures the authentic emotions and sentiments of his subjects.

Fueled by an unwavering love for photography, Yared received his first camera at the age of 12, igniting a lifelong devotion to capturing the beauty of the world. Through his lens, he encapsulates his passion for art, documenting the realities of life and the everyday experiences of individuals. His unique perspective often delves into the interplay of geometric shapes found in diverse natural settings, further showcasing his artistic vision.

Yared Tekleab, an ardent admirer of art and a lover of life, possesses an empathetic soul that enables him to encapsulate any situation and evoke profound emotions through his photography. His exceptional talent has garnered recognition, and his work has been featured in various magazines, testament to his artistic prowess.

Beyond the realm of photography, Yared Berhane is a true artist, embodying the spirit of creativity and dedication. As he continues to pursue his passion and artistic vision, we extend our heartfelt wishes for his continued success and fulfillment.

3. Is art and photography your primary occupation? How does engaging in art make you feel?

Yes, photography is my primary profession. I specialize in capturing portraits and also cover various family events such as birthdays, baptisms, and weddings for different companies. I have a studio located in the beautiful downtown area of Sacramento.

Art, for me, is not just a job but also a source of personal fulfillment. It evokes a range of emotions within me. It brings me a sense of joy, inspiration, and inner peace. When I immerse myself in the creative process, whether it's through photography or other artistic endeavors, I feel a deep connection with my surroundings and an opportunity to express my unique perspective.

4. You mentioned learning to draw with your brother. Does your family have a background in the arts?

While my brother played a significant role in teaching me how to draw, my mother also contributed to my artistic development. However, our family background primarily consists of engineers and philosophers. My older sister and I are the ones who have embraced our creative side and pursued artistic endeavors within our family.

5. If you were not involved in the field of art, what profession do you think you would have chosen?

If art were not a part of my life, I can envision myself pursuing a career in biology or radiology. I have always been fascinated by the intricacies of the natural world and the field of medical imaging.

INTERVIEW

BIOGRAPHY

6. Have you exhibited your work in galleries? If so, where can we view your artwork?

In the early 2000s, I had the opportunity to showcase my artwork in galleries, including a high school exhibition in 1998. During my college years, I participated in an art contest where my artwork was selected among 49 pieces from all over Northern California to be featured inside the art gallery at American River College. Although I had some exhibitions in 2012, I eventually made the decision to step back from actively working in the art field.

7. Do you believe that art has the power to bring comfort to people's hearts?

Absolutely! Art possesses a unique ability to soothe and heal hearts. It serves as a beautiful medium for expressing and sharing the diverse experiences and beauty of life itself.

8. What message do you aim to convey through your photographs?

Through my photography, I strive to capture the essence of individuals, breaking free from the confines of frames and expectations. I am particularly drawn to fashion, beauty, and professional portraiture, where I aim to showcase my unique vision and talent. I have a deep passion for photography and seek to capture magical moments and the inherent beauty of my subjects.

9. Can you share any details about your upcoming projects?

Currently, I am working on a series of photographs featuring models, where I intend to express my artistic vision and showcase my skills through my lens. Collaborating with talented makeup artists, I am excited to present my perspective and artistry to the world.

10. What advice would you give to your younger self?

I would advise my younger self to be discerning when it comes to friendships. Not everyone within your circle is necessarily a true friend. It is important to recognize and cherish those genuine connections who will stand by you through both good and challenging times. True friends become like family, and it's essential to surround oneself with people who genuinely care.

Quality, not quantity

We have made quality our habit. It’s not something that we just strive for – we live by this principle every day.
